Durlston Bay - Andrew Marsh - 19/07/2008

Had a wonderful trip to Durlston Bay. The weather and the scenery were beautiful. We descended to the shore via the zig-zag footpath and made our way west. Fossils could be seen as soon as we stepped on the beach; isolated lepidotes fish scales and fragments of bone (presumably turtle) could all be seen on the surface of rocks on the beach. The geology is so varied that you never knew what you might find. My star find was part of the wing of a large dragonfly from the extinct family Aeschnidiidae (their wings can be recognised from their generally large size and the numerous small pigmented cells in them). Apparently to find them any insect wing is quite a good achievement at Durlston (tough little beetle elytra are more common), but there's still very few beds that yield even these, and virtually all the insect remains are tiny, so to find a reasonably substantial piece, even if incomplete, is fairly unusual. I was chuffed! Well worth a visit!
